The anatomy of the human heart is located in the chest, specifically the middle compartment of the thorax. The heart is one of the most important and vital organs in the human body. Its function is to pump blood around the body through blood vessels in what is known as the circulatory system. As the heart pumps blood throughout the body, it carries oxygen, nutrients and metabolic waste products. The heart is covered by a membrane called the pericardium. This membrane has the function of preventing friction with other organs as the heart is pumping blood.
Structure of the human heart
The heart is divided into four main chambers, the left and right atria and the left and right ventricles. The atria are smaller than the ventricles and have a wall. Each atrium functions as an air receiver, so they are connected to blood vessels which carry blood to the heart. The ventricles are larger and their function is to pump blood out of the heart and to the rest of the body. Ventricles are connected to the atrium, which is where they receive the blood from.
Chambers in the right side of the heart are smaller than in the left side because they have different functions and two different systems of circulation. The chambers in the right side circulate blood to and from the lungs, and the chambers in the left side pump blood throughout the rest of the circulatory system.
Systolic and diastolic heart functions
The human heart has three layers, which are the epicardium (outer layer), myocardium, and endocardium (inner layer). Muscles of the heart may be in two conditions, systolic and diastolic. Systolic is when the heart muscles have contracted to pump blood out of the heart, and diastolic is when the heart system is relaxed to allow blood to enter the heart.
